The Dog Ate My Homework and Other Annoying Excuses.

Today Teacher Rants.

If I were to describe myself as a student, I’d say I was a pretty good one.  Not brilliant, but not bad either. I had my share of failed tests, missed homeworks and unruly classroom behavior but I think one thing I never forgot was taking responsibility for my actions. This week was rather challenging for me as a teacher, as I had to contend with so many excuses be it for tardiness, forgotten assignments or what not. Sometimes I wish students would just be sincere and say “Miss, I’m really sorry I forgot” then do something about it such as not repeat it anymore. However, if it is a repeated behavior, it invalidates the excuse, in my opinion.

Yes, this week my “annoy-me-why-don’t-you” was pushed to the limit.

Interestingly, the amount of excuses I received this week and what they were made me realize one thing: even excuses have changed because of technology. No longer do we blame the dog for eating our homework, but modern technology. Here were my annoying excuses this week:

“Miss, wala kasi akong internet kagabi e” (I had no internet access last night).

“Na-corrupt USB ko e.” (My USB was corrupted)

“Miss, naubusan kasi ng ink ang printer ko” (My printer ran out of ink)

“Di ko kasi na-receive yung text ng group mate ko e” (I didn’t receive my groupmates’text)

My answer: with all the available resources around you (i.e. internet cafés plus the fact that libraries in most universities offer FREE internet access), that is not an excuse. Go get a dog instead.

  1. I remember back in high school when we were all (well, almost anyway) and we had to submit a certain typewritten assignment, a classmate had some tech-related excuse…can’t remember if it was related to his computer or the floppy disk (yung 5 1/2 inch pa yan ha) or Wordstar or naubusan sya ng continuous paper…and THE TEACHER EXCUSED HIM!

Baka thinking nila is that baka sakali lang makalusot, lalo na kung di pa techie si Teacher. Malas lang nila that you are knowledgeable about tech stuff. :)

      naubusan ng paper…lupit!

siguro nga they think that they’ll get away with it kasi “it’s not their fault” but the computers fault diba? thing is, i always assign A WEEK IN ADVANCE! and i give reminders pa. PLUS lets not forget: college na sila. I always remind them that they’re adults already and that in the real world of work, they can’t get away with “i had no internet access”.

but you’re right: malas nila ako teacher nila hehehe….sometimes i tease them about the comments they post on facebook etc. di lang nila alam na nakikita ko!

  2. I realized may typo ako…sa first sentence ko, it should have been “we were all (well, almost anyway) using the typewriter”. Shucks, no sense tuloy ang sinabi ko. LOL

Oo nga, college na sila and they should know better.

Although minsan I think parents may have contributed to this. I’ve met parents who DID their kids’ homework in elementary! Come on, those homework are supposed to be learning experiences for their kids. Di tuloy marunong maghomework at magbudget ng time.

“friend” ka nila sa facebook? :)

correct ka diyan doc joey! parents kinda contribute to the habit too. if not them, the tutor who did the hw for them!

no!!! di ako tumatanggap ng students as friends but i have cousins who go to the same school and are friends with them so i kinda stumble into their comments every now and then!!!

  3. True, mas katanggap tanggap siguro yung reason na kinain ng aso ang homework. =) Homework isn’t just something a teacher gives to “make their life miserable,” may lesson about responsibility na embedded with each homework given.
